Running the Race

"Let your eyes look straight ahead, fix your gaze directly before you. Make level paths for your feet and take only ways that are firm. Do not swerve to the right or to the left; keep your foot from evil."
Proverbs 4: 25-27

"Let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith."
Hebrews 12: 1 & 2

Anyone who has seen an Olympic track knows the pavement is smooth and level. It does not have unexpected curves, pits of mud or a smattering of gravel. The runners keep a sharp focus on what lay ahead. If they worried about the guy behind them or turned to wave at their mothers on the sidelines, do you think they would win?

It is that same intense drive that we should have as Christians. Lord knows there are plenty of distractions in the race, but we need to keep our eyes on Jesus to finish well. He is the "author and perfecter of our faith". To me, this means he wrote my life story, he knows how and when it's going to end and he knows if I will wipe out, twist my ankle or feel like quitting. He's my Coach!

"Turn your eyes upon Jesus,
Look full in His wonderful face,
And the things of earth will grow strangely dim,
In the light of his glory and grace."

For You

"I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people...A Savior has been born to you."
Luke 2: 10 (emphasis added)

If you read the Bible as if you were the only living person in the whole world, certain verses come alive like never before, leaping off the page. Imagine an angel holding a shiny, red gift bearing a card that says, "To You." Would you open it? Or would you dismiss it with a wave of your hand saying, "Certainly that can't be for me." How could it be any clearer? A Savior has been born TO YOU!

Whatever sin you have committed, whatever shady regrets claw at your coattails, no matter how many times you've been told you don't measure up, it does not change the tag on the gift: TO YOU. Open it and you will find all the unconditional love you can't extract out of any person. You will find a man named Jesus, who is also God, lay down his life for YOU. You will find rest for your soul.

Accept the Gift. Open the door of your heart and let Jesus make a difference. Then you will have a Merry Christmas every day of the year.


Fear Not!

"And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, 'Do not be afraid...'"
Luke 2: 8-10

I can't really say I believe in ghosts, but I do believe in the unseen world consisting of angels and demons because the Bible talks about them.

One night, I awoke to see an apparition, ten feet tall, hovering in a quivering way over the foot of my bed! Thinking I was dreaming, I blinked my eyes several times, but it did not disappear. Sheer terror struck my heart as it leaped and raced in a sickening way. Fear and adrenaline coursed through my body as I woke my disbelieving husband. I know I saw something. Whether its intentions were good or evil, I do not know.

Although it went away, how was I going to sleep in that room again? Would it return? In faith, I turned to the One who is omniscient, omnipotent and omnipresent. As I prayed for protection from the enemy, the peace that passes all understanding encompassed my soul as I heard the voice of Jesus say, "Fear not." Just as the shepherds were immediately calmed, so was I. I slept in peace, like a baby.

The Greatest Story Ever Told

Luke 1: 28, 30, 38

The angel Gabriel has visited Mary saying, "Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you. Do not be afraid, Mary. You have found favor with God."

    The word "favor" means "friendly or kind regard, approval, liking." The Lord likes Mary very much. He approves of her. Even though she is young, she stands in high regard, so high that she will bear the Son of God whose kingdom shall never end!

     Why is Mary so favored? In verse 45 of the same chapter, her cousin Elizabeth, filled with the Holy Spirit, tells us why: "Blessed is she who has believed that what the Lord has said to her will be accomplished." When she was told she'd be overshadowed by the power of the Most High, resulting in pregnancy, she didn't laugh, doubt, argue or complain. She simply said, "I am the Lord's servant. May it be to me as you have said." She believed and she submitted to prophecy's fulfillment.

     The Christmas story is filled with examples of those who were willing to look, listen, obey and follow. Their obedience was key to unfolding the plan of salvation. There's Joseph who listened to words of guidance and warning multiple times, uprooting whatever plans he may have had as they moved from Bethlehem to Egypt to Nazareth.

     There's Mary, who must've suffered greatly with an unplanned pregnancy. Who would believe her farfetched explanations? She gives birth in a stable with no midwife, only Joseph to help. Yet, she is part of a marvelous tapestry! Generations will call her blessed.

     There's also the Magi who curiously follow a star to a foreign land. The shepherds heard the gospel through a great company of heavenly hosts and hurried off to see for themselves, telling others as they praised God.

     Lord, grant me a willing, believing spirit such as these people had, so your great story never ends.

     "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests." Luke 2: 14

The Gift that Keeps on Giving

"Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit." Acts 2: 38

"But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self control." Galatians 5: 22 & 23

     What gift are you most expecting to receive this Christmas? Can you recall what you got last Christmas? Or maybe, five Christmasses ago? Chances are, that gift has been used, loaned, consumed or forgotten.

     God gives a gift that keeps on giving: his Holy Spirit. The recipient automatically becomes one of the best gift-givers as the fruit of the Spirit exudes from that personality. Who could not use more love? Joy and peace are not just words on a Christmas card, they are daily gifts we're given all year 'round. Don't hold on to them though! They are meant to be shared.

     My prayer for you is that you would accept God's free gift of salvation by acknowledging your need of a Savior and inviting Jesus to come into your heart. Then you will have the gift you will never forget; the gift that keeps on giving!

Follow The Star

"After they heard the king, they went on their way, and the star they had seen in the east went ahead of them, until it stopped over the place where the child was."
Matthew 2:9

"Your word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path."
Psalm 119:105

     The star in the east showed the magi in the Christmas story where to find the King of the Jews so they could worship him, presenting their gifts. Like one of those advertising beams that scan the night sky, the light of the star showed them the way.

     In a similar way, God's word is a light unto my path, showing me the way. What a veritable treasure the Bible is! It sheds light on how the world began and how it will end, how the people fell from grace and how God picked them back up time and again.  Most importantly, it leads me to the Babe of Bethlehem, on to the Sea of Galilee and over to the cross of Calvary. It shines light into the empty tomb, showing me the folded grave clothes. It illuminates the ascending Christ who promised to come back again, taking us to be with him in Paradise. I am not left in the dark since the Bible frankly tells me:

     "For God so loved the world that He gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in him shall not perish, but shall have eternal life." (John 3:16)

     Follow the star by reading the Bible. You will never be lost.

My Dinner Guest

"Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with him, and he with me."
Revelation 3:20

     Exclamation points are reserved to show either surprise or strong emotion to the reader. Jesus uses one here so imagine his voice rising a pitch, his body language expressing urgency to capture the attention of those searching for him. "Where are you, Lord?" I may ask in desperation. But, all the while, he's looking for me! He's already at my door, knocking to get my attention; all I have to do is open it and I shall dine with the King of Kings!

     I could never dream of eating a dry crumpet with Queen Elizabeth, but the creator of the universe will share a meal with me, just as he did with the tax collectors and sinners during his time on earth.  To dine with someone requires intimacy, friendship. Sure, I suppose I could wolf down a cheeseburger with someone and barely say a word, but Christ said in the above verse that we shall eat together. I take that as a promise of conversation, laughter, lingering in each other's presence while exploring personalities.

     If I have an honored guest over, I swiff the floors, dust the furniture and select tasty dishes. If my guest becomes an intimate friend, however, I know I can share anything with that person and still be loved unconditionally, despite substandard food or a chaotic presentation.

     This is the place I am arriving at with my friend, Jesus. He wants to see me on all levels, not just when I am at my gleaming best. I have become his child; he is my Father who asks over a Tuna Helper, "How was your day today?"

     Open the door and welcome Jesus. You will never be sorry!

When Jesus Calls My Name

"When Jesus reached the spot, he looked up and said to him, 'Zacchaeus, come down immediately. I must stay at your house today.' So he came down at once and welcomed him gladly."
Luke 19: 1-10

     Put yourself in Zacchaeus' small shoes. He wanted to see Jesus but, since he was too short to see over the throng, he climbed the sycamore tree that hung over the road Jesus was traveling upon. He just wanted to see him, perhaps in the same way we would pine to see a visiting celebrity. From his vantage point, excitement built as Jesus walked right underneath him but, incredibly, Jesus looked up and called him by name! By this time, the diminutive Zacchaeus probably about fell out of the tree as all eyes turned toward him. Did he just hear Jesus say he was coming to his house today? Notice the urgency in the chosen words: immediately, must, today.

     Zacchaeus was a tax collector who used to overcharge people, but when Jesus changed his heart, he made right all his wrongs, clearly repenting of his sins. May I also gladly welcome Jesus into my home, just as it is. Dust may rumble by and I may not have steaks to fry, but I can gladly open the door to my heart. So can you when he calls your name.

The True Christmas Present

When Zechariah, the father of John the Baptist, finally found his tongue, he used it very eloquently when he said:

     "...for you will go on before the Lord to prepare the way for him, to give his people the knowledge of salvation through the forgiveness of their sins, because of the tender mercy of our God, by which the rising sun will come to us from heaven to shine on those living in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet onto the path of peace."
Luke 1: 76-79

     The true Christmas present is wrapped in these words for those who will receive him - and what a gift! When I see the faces of those Christians I knew who died this year and their loved ones who still mourn, I see their feet on the path of peace, guided by the tender mercy of our God. Death is not dark and scary, with rattling bones and worms that crawl. Just as the rising sun casts its beams across the darkness that was night, Jesus rose from the grave to bring eternal light to the dreary darkness of death. The curse has been broken. Fear not and have a merry Christmas!

A Mother's Grief

"When she saw that he was a fine child, she hid him for three months...So the woman took the baby and nursed him. When the child grew older, she took him to Pharaoh's daughter and he became her son."
Exodus 2

     Crawl into the breaking heart of Moses' mother for a moment. Her people are slaves, her friends' sons are being tossed into the river to drown when she has a fine son herself. For three months, she adores him secretly: no baby showers, no passing him among congratulating relatives, she must muffle his cries. Then, to save his life, she must give him to the daughter of the man who has ordered this mass murder of infants. Yes, her son lives, but now belongs to another. The injustice! The rage at the unfairness of it all!

     Yet, through the haze, God has a plan for this fine child. He shall be a deliverer. Just as baby Jesus survives a mass murder of babies ordered by a crazed despot and grew to become a deliverer of his people, so does Moses.

     God, you work in mysterious ways. You often use the youngest, the weakest, the person whom all odds are against in which to work your glory. Thank you for keeping us humble that way.

     I love you, Lord.

You are NOT God's Favorite!

"Serve wholeheartedly, as if you were serving the Lord, not men, because you know that the Lord will reward everyone for whatever good he does, whether slave or free."
Ephesians 6: 7, 8

     Recently, I changed jobs. I went from being a secretary to working in the kitchen. This new job pays less and I wear a uniform, not dressy clothes. No nail polish or jewelry is permitted. Sneakers have replaced my heels. Does what I wear make me a better or lesser person? Should I think that a menial labor job is beneath me?

     Heavens, no! Unlike people, God is impartial and does not show favoritism. He cares little if I am a corporate manager or a beverage server; what matters is the goodness, kindness or gentleness that reside in my spirit, coming to fruition as I work. These are the traits that make every person successful.

We Have the Mind of Christ

"In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters."
Genesis 1: 1 & 2

"For who among men knows the thoughts of a man except the man's spirit within him? In the same way, no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. We have not received the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we may understand what God has freely given us."
1 Corinthians 2: 11, 12

"The man without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God for they are foolishness to him, and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually discerned."
1 Corinthians 2:14

     How did the world begin? Was there a Big Bang? Did we evolve from a lower species? How do you answer these perplexing questions?

    It is with sheer confidence that I can say evolution is foolishness. Those who do not believe that "in the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth," cannot believe it because they are lacking discernment from the Spirit. This same Spirit who enters the heart of each believer was there at the very onset of creation, "hovering over the waters." Those who have been born of the Spirit have access to the very thoughts of God!

     I do not even know the thoughts of my husband, after knowing him for twenty-five years, because I do not possess his spirit. But, praise be to God, the Holy Spirit dwells within me. I know how the world and all its inhabitants came to be because He tells me plainly in his word.

    

Dont' Be a Doubting Thomas

"If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him. But, when he asks, he must believe and not doubt, because he who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind."  (emphasis mine)
James 1:5 & 6

     God is more than willing to give generously, no questions asked. He doesn't stop to analyze why we're asking for wisdom, not does he delve into our past before giving. The only thing he's looking for is FAITH. "Faith is being sure of what we hope for and certian of what we do not see." (Hebrews 11:1)

     So, when I seek answers, I must not allow doubts to creep in. Satan's good at that. Even while I'm praying, he pokes my side and says in my ear, "You don't really believe that, do you?" Like a child, I must have faith. It can begin as small as a mustard seed, but if I truly believe God, never wavering, then I can walk on water, like Peter did.

     Look at Jesus, not at the waves.

Regrets

"We all stumble in many ways. If anyone is never at fault in what he says, he is a perfect man, able to keep his whole body in check."
James 3:2

    The book of James is thought to be penned by the very brother of Jesus. As he wrote about the power of evil speech in the third chapter, I wonder if he spoke from the experience of regret and shame? When Jesus walked the earth "even his own brothers did not believe in him." (John 7:5) Perhaps James ridiculed Jesus, along with the other scoffers.

     Imagine if you were one of Jesus' siblings? Would you have felt like James? Not only is Jesus the eldest, but he's perfect, too? After years of following in Joseph's footsteps as a carpenter, suddenly he goes off on some bizarre ministry? Maybe we would be skeptical too, not believing in Him.

     Thanks be to God that Jesus paid for our sins and remembers them no more. James evidently became a believer and author of the epistle. God is patient with us, not willing to let any of us perish so we don't have to let our regrets rule over us. Let Jesus do that instead!

Victory In Jesus

"But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light."
1Peter 2:9

     My 89 year old father has dementia. He is slow of step, his eyes are weak, he cannot hear well and he is confused about many things but he is a part of the royal priesthood, a citizen of a holy nation who has been chosen to walk in His wonderful light. To look at him in his flannel pants and his silly stocking cap, he seems like just an aged, ordinary man, but when I tucked him into bed last night (after convincing him that it was indeed nighttime), I asked him what he wanted to pray about. Without hesitation, he declared, "I'm glad I know Him. When I was in the War, I didn't know him then, but He knew me."

     With that declaration, the flannel pants transformed into the regal robe of Christ. The walker by the bedside became a scepter and the stocking cap, a crown. Recognized by God as his dear son, a joint heir with Christ, my father sings his praises in the wonderful light of grace.

     Dementia can't touch that! Hallelujah!

Full Body-Off Restoration

"And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast."
1 Peter 5:10

     An old rusty car sits in a field, forgotten, seemingly useless. It has seen better days.

     Sometimes, I feel like that - weathered by relationships, rusted by stressors of life, all the air is out of the tires and I don't feel like going anywhere.

     So it is that I take great interest in the verse above. God himself will restore me, making me better than I was before! Lovingly, he will rub out the rust and grime left by sin and struggle, replacing it with shiny strength and a steadfast Spirit. With Jesus behind the wheel, I'll be road-worthy, good for another 100,000 miles or 50 years, whichever comes first.

The First Murder

"Sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must master it." Genesis 4:7

"Then the Lord said to Cain, 'Where is your brother, Abel?'" verse 9

"Cain said to the Lord, 'My punishment is more that I can bear. Today you are driving me from the land and I will be hidden from your presence; I will be a restless wanderer on the earth and whoever finds me will kill me.'" vs. 13, 14

"But the Lord said to Cain, 'Not so, if anyone kills you, he will suffer vengeance seven times over." vs 15

     The Lord's kindness and justice are so strongly evident in this story of the first murder. First, God warned Cain that something bad could happen if he didn't get a handle on his anger. Then, after Cain had killed his brother, God gave him a chance to confess his sin, but he lied. Still, after doling out his punishment, God showed love and mercy by placing a mark on Cain so no one would kill him.

     Cain still had to pay consequences for his sin, but God was watching over him. The same holds true for us. We have all sinned and fallen short of the glory of God, but, while we were yet sinners, Christ laid down his life willingly for us. He became sin so that we could have eternal life. Thanks and praise belong to him!

Don't Keep Quiet

"Then the Lord said, 'The outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah is so great and their sin so grievious that I will go down and see if what they have done is as bad as the outcry that has reached me. If not, I will know.'"
Genesis 18: 20 and 21

     There were not even ten righteous people left in these two evil cities prior to their destruction so I wonder who was doing the outcrying? Perhaps a wandering caravan of merchants who couldn't believe their eyes? A string of appalled relatives? Perhaps the residents of Sodom and Gomorrah had such dastardly reputations that the city walls could not contain them? Whatever the reason, the important part remains: there were folks who were so disturbed by what they saw and heard that they cried out to the Lord. And He heard them!

     Sin matters! Selfish behavior fosters an entitlement agenda, thus bringing this response: "If it feels good, do it. After all, I am not hurting anyone."

     We all have a responsibility toward our fellow man. If we are concerned about something or someone who is going down the wrong path, we can bring them to God in prayer, like a memo that has ASAP stamped on it. We are our brother's keepers.

Believe it or Not!

     Reading some of the facts in the Bible is like reading those of Ripley's Believe it or Not. Here are some examples:

  • Giant slain by David over nine feet tall (1 Sam. 17:4)
  • Balaam's donkey verbalizes question (Num. 22:28)
  • Man's wife becomes pillar of salt (Gen 19:26)
  • Water pours from a rock (Ex. 17:6)
  • Red Sea parts in two; people walk on dry path (Ex 14:21, 22)
  • Worldwide deluge; one family survives (Gen 6:13)
  • Hungry lions tame around Daniel (Dan 6:22)
  • Three men, bound and fully clothed, survive fiery furnace; not one hair singed (Dan 3:26)
  • Virgin bears child (Luke 1:34)
  • Man dead four days walks out of tomb (John 11:44)
  • Cruicified man rises from dead (John 20:6,7)
     Now, the reader must decide: believe it or not? Just remember, the story is not over yet. This headline is yet to come:

     Jesus Christ descends from the clouds, surrounded by angels; every eye shall see! (Rev 1:7)

Believe it.

God's Emotions

"The Lord saw how great man's wickedness on the earth had become, and that every inclination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil all the time. The Lord was grieved that he made man on the earth, and his heart was filled with pain... But Noah found favor in the eyes of the Lord."
Genesis 6: 5-8

      Imagine God during the time of creation, excitedly crafting the various animals, tropical fish, birds from the ostrich to the hummingbird, thousands of flowers, bushes and trees. The shiny acorn with its funny cap, the glassy curve of the cat's eye, the delicate velvety colors of the butterfly wing, squishy red berries on a verdant bush, chattering chipmunks amok underground. The Genesis account of creation just says that God proclaimed it all "good", but I would like to imagine his playful creativity, the smile on his face as his came up with such awesome things. Then, he placed a man in the paradise, hoping he'd love all he made as much as he loved him.

     So, you can also imagine the pain in his heart as this paradise became muddied with the smut of sin. "His heart was filled with pain." Out of all those people, only Noah found favor in his eyes. This makes me want to try harder to please God, to be one who would find favor rather than cause pain. After all, when I examine the work of his hands, I see the lovely gifts that he made for mankind. I do not want him to be grieved that he made me.

What are the Benefits?

"Praise the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits - who forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the pit and crowns you with love and compassion, who satisfies your desires with good things so that your youth is renewed like the eagle's."
Psalm 103: 2-5

     I have never been crowned with anything. Probably my only remote chance at this honor was if I were elected homecoming queen in high school, but I was never considered for that. I watched the coronation of Queen Elizabeth on television and wondered what she thought of the thronging crowds, the pomp and circumstance, the responsibility. Living in a castle has its price.

     But check this out: God crowns me with love and compassion! And that is only one of the benefits I receive as his believer. Just as when a person accepts a new job, they want to know "what are the benefits?" Not only do I have the free gift of eternal life and salvation from hell, I have healing, redemption, love, compassion, good things, renewed youth and vitality.

     He loves the world so much that he gave his only begotten Son, yet he also provides all these fringe benefits! Thank you, Dear Lord, for choosing me to crown with love. What others have overlooked, you see. I love you, too.

My Super Hero

"Let them give thanks to the Lord for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for men, for he breaks down gates of bronze and cuts through bars of iron."
Psalm 107: 15 & 16

     I adore this Superhero description of what God can do! I can just picture the downtrodden masses huddled behind bars of iron, held in the grip of their nemesis, then God flies in out of nowhere, larger than life (maybe even wearing a cape!). With omnipotence, he breaks down what the strongest man in the masses could not, setting them all free from bondage.

     Don't we all desire someone stronger than we are? Someone wiser, more capable, always there when we need him, ready to leap tall buildings?

     What iron bars has he bent for me? What bronze gates has he cut through? Most importantly, he has freed me from Satan's prison of hopelessness. He has dressed me in the robes of righteousness and made me a daughter of the King. He eases my daily burdens as he hears my cries for help.

     He is my Super Hero.

What Defines You?

"Watch out! Be on our guard against all kinds of greed; a man's life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions."
Luke 12:15

     I've seen a bumper sticker that said, "He who dies with the most toys wins." What do they win, I wonder, because it's also true "there are no u-hauls behind a hearse!" Naked we come into this world and naked we leave it behind so what do designer clothes and expensive handbags do for me?

     I like to watch "American Pickers." So many times, an older person will throw open his garage door and I gasp at the conglomeration of his stuff! He doesn't even know what he has and yet is reluctant to sell it because he has an emotional attachment to it.  How sad, that this person so long in the tooth holds on to rusty, dusty possessions like a life raft in a roiling sea.

     During my lifetime, I have been down to a box of rice, bankruptcy and living in the back rooms of a store, but I've also been blessed with prosperity and plenty. Inside, I am still the same person because I look to Jesus for the fulfillment of life. He never changes. His value never wavers with the stock market. His salvation is a free gift, yet you can't put a price on it. This is what defines who I am. I am Christ living in me.

Look Up!

"The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. Day after day, they pour forth speech; night after night, they display knowledge. There is no speech or language where their voice is not heard."
Psalm 19: 1-3

     Look up! What do you see? Listen. What do you hear? Seems like some folks walk around in oblivion to the glory that surrounds them. Did they miss the majesty made by the soaring hawk? Did they witness the tenderness of the ruffled sparrow? Do they marvel at the precision of the galaxy, the prompt rising of the sun, the brilliant hues that herald its arrival? Did the chattering of the cross squirrel reach their ears?

     No matter what language you speak or what corner of the world you possess, you can look up and take in the glory of the Lord. Listen! God has something great to say!

Love The Giver More Than the Gift

"You may say to yourself, 'My power and the strength of my hands produced this wealth for me.' But remember the Lord your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth."
Deuteronomy 8: 17 and 18

     It comforts me to look around my home and see gifts others have given me. There is a green glass vase from my sister on the table. I smell the pumpkin spice candle from my daughter. The silver teapot from my mom gleams from the china cabinet. The items themselves, though lovely, are just things. What they represent is the love of the givers. When I give gifts, I hope the recipient knows how much I care for them, regardless of the cost of the gift.

     Last night, God bestowed me with a gorgeous, changeable sky. Over to the north were cumulus clouds boasting shades of grey, orange and purple. To the south, the sun's striations of color cut through banks of rain. Rumbles of thunder caused me to look west at more beauty. I could just imagine God's expectant face as I unwrapped this gift: "Well, do you like it, Rachel?"

     Every day, God's generosity is evident to all, no matter what language they speak or what belief they have. He sends rain to the just and the unjust. Remember, when you unwrap the latest treasure, to love the Giver more than the gift.

Read the Last Chapter First

"He will wipe away every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away."
Revelation 21:4

     I am not well known for my patience. I wear new clothes right away. I give presents away without holding on to them until Christmas. I don't buy subscriptions ahead of time because I don't know how long I'll be around. I don't like to set goals and patiently plod along until I achieve them. I live for today because it is all I have.

     When I am getting acquainted with a new book, I read the jacket, check for photographs, peruse the author's bio, then I often read the last chapter first. I don't like to wait and see how things are going to be. Will this character die? Will the two romantic figures get married? I want to know more about it before I invest a lot of time into what could be a boring read.

     As a Christian, I can eagerly read the Bible because I've read the last chapter! The most blessed hope is waiting like a crown of righteousness at the end of this crazy life. Like Mary and Martha, I cry in sorrow at the death of a loved one, but that's back in chapter four (or whatever)! Keep on reading. Lazarus, the gals' brother who's been dead in the tomb four days, is ordered to come on out of there by Jesus - and he does! We who place our trust in this same Jesus can live as optimists because we know how the story ends. I will hear his voice commanding, "Rachel, come out!" and I will cast off my casket and step into the light.

      "Oh, death where is thy sting? Oh, grave where is thy victory?" The destruction, decay and disaster that disease and death bring are all part of that "old order of things" that will pass away. Read it again: "NO MORE DEATH"!

     Now that's something I can wait for.

The Caretaker of God's Property

"But Christ is faithful as a son over God's house. And we are his house, if we hold on to our courage and the hope of which we boast."
Hebrews 3:6

     Sometimes, my husband and I go on a trip. We ask our daughter to look after the pets and property while we are gone and we never have to worry about anything because we know she will care for it as if it were her own. She grew up in that house and, therefore, has a special affinity for it.

     My faith in God makes me a part of his house; Christ, his Son, is my caretaker until I leave this world. He's not going to let anyone break in. If the refrigerator breaks down, he will fix it before the food spoils. He'll even water the houseplants. Why would I ever choose not to trust in Him? In the same way I trust my daughter, I place my confidence in the Caretaker of God's property.

What's Inside Comes Out

"The good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and the evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For out of the overflow of his heart his mouth speaks."
Luke 6:45

     Self examination is never easy and rarely fun. When I look back on some of the things that have come from the "overflow of my heart", I am embarrassed. When I am stressed or fatigued, I am more apt to bite someone's head off. What rotten fruit I am producing! The hearer doesn't care how tired I am, and I can never erase what has been said.

     Lord, I can't do life alone. I want to build my house on the Rock by doing the right thing, by living the Word. Examine my heart and make it clean so that only good things are stored up, ready to spill out.

Do Not Be Deceived

"For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths."
2 Timothy 4:3 & 4

     In a box in the corner of the attic, I found a belt and buckle which my father had brought home after World War II. On it is emblazened an eagle, a swastika and, in German, the phrase, "God with us." This shocked me, seeing those words beneath that hated symbol of evil. How could God be with the Nazis who exterminated millions of Jewish people?

     Hitler presented himself as a new messiah with a new cross: the swastika. He stated openly that "it was his intention to begin a new religion that would accomplish what Christianity failed to bring about."* The citizens of Germany had been through rough times after World War I. They wanted to believe Hitler was the answer, but their itching ears forgot what the true questions were. They believed the myth of racial purity and forsook God's greatest commandment: Love one another as I have loved you. And so, with a copy of Mein Kampf on the altar and a swastika perched above, the churches of that day endorsed a man who brainwashed and deceived them.

     The Bible clearly warns of such anti-Christs and there are bound to be more of them. How can we keep from also being deceived? Keep your eyes fixed upon Jesus. Do not swerve to the right or left. Study your scriptures, writing them on the tablet of your heart. Those who remain standing will receive a crown of righteousness in the end.

Safe Delivery

"And I was delivered from the lion's mouth. The Lord will rescue me from every evil attack and will bring me safely to his heavenly kingdom. To him be glory forever and ever, amen."
2 Timothy 4:18

     I had a stressful week at work. By day's end, my mind and body felt battered, as if I'd been under attack all day long. But when I calmed down, I looked back at the week and saw the flowers of redemption that bloomed along the bleak path. There was a reassuring smile from a friend. Someone gave me homemade cookies. Another friend prayed with me at lunchtime.  Like a UPS package in the right hands, these kind souls are God's delivery men in brown along the way. He uses them to help me arrive safely in his kingdom.

     To show my appreciation, I must pay it forward, helping to deliver others along the way. When I see someone else struggling, I must offer my hand, send words of encouragement, smile. We're all in this together.

You Died

"Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. For you died and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry."
Colossians 3: 2 & 3

     There was an article in the paper about a man who was declared legally dead and then resurfaced. He was having a hard time reversing this declaration. A judge told him, "You're still deceased as far as the law is concerned." My husband joked, "He could use that to his advantage. If he were stopped for speeding, he'd just say he was a dead man."

     As a Christian, we have to die to self so we can live in Christ. It's not always easy to be in the world but not of the world. We are, by nature, sinful but, with the help of God, we must slay that propensity to sin. Other folks may not understand that. They want us to go along with them down that wide road, but we are dead to that. Our true citizenship is in heaven and, until we get there, we ache with longing.

You Can't Fight God

"Why do the nations conspire and the peoples plot in vain? The kings of the earth take their stand and the rulers gather together against the Lord and against his Anointed One...The One enthroned in heaven laughs; the Lord scoffs at them. Then he rebukes them in his anger and terrifies them in his wrath saying, 'I have installed my King on Zion, my holy hill.'"
Psalm 2: 1,2, 4-6


     The American Civil Liberties Union likes to go around looking for items of offense (in their opinion), like a portrait of Jesus that hung in one of the buildings of the Jackson, Ohio school district. It had graced their Hall of Honor since 1947, along with other visages of historical importance. The ACLU saw it differently. Their lawsuit against the school district claims, "students and visitors to the school will continue to suffer permanent, severe and irreparable harm and injury" from seeing this portrait.

    Gee, Jesus is powerful, isn't he? One look at his portrait can cause severe harm and injury? Really? When I see his portrait, I see the only begotten Son of God who gave his life for mine. Jesus has been given "all authority in heaven and on earth." (Matthew 28:18) Vengeance is his and he will have it. It may seem like the Lord is being slow or silent, but he does not want anyone to perish but to come to salvation in Christ Jesus.

     Hebrews 10:31 says, "It's a dreadful thing to fall into the hands of the living God." I would not want to be a member of the ACLU when Jesus comes again.

Where Were You?

"Where were you when I laid the earth's foundation? Tell me, if you understand. Who marked off its dimensions? Surely you know! Who stretched a measuring line across it? On what were its footings set, or who laid its cornerstone while the morning stars sang together and all the angels shouted for joy?"
Job 38: 4-7

     Humans have built some magnificent structures, like the Dubai Tower, but it takes many people combining their intelect and ability. One person could not construct the tower alone. Plus, he'd have to use materials and foundations that God already provided. Who could create something as amazing as this earth from nothing, by himself?

     I can picture the stars singing together while the angels cheered as God formed each animal. Unique feathers, colorful wings, instinctive capabilites, compound eyes, just the right type of claw or hoof for the environment. So much thought went into each creation. Nocturnal animals will need larger eyes. Cats will need strong legs for jumping, claws for fighting. What type of teeth shall each mammal possess?

    Whenever I feel overwhelmed, I've only to put things into proper perspective by seeing God as he truly is - so much larger, wiser and creative than I. I have no idea how a plain caterpillar morphs into a butterfly inside its cocoon but God does. I can go to him with all my needs.

There's Real Power in Prayer

"For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are - yet was without sin. Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need."
Hebrews 4: 15 and 16

     I've noticed a shift in wording lately. For instance, a coworker of mine is very ill in the hospital so a message went out to the staff to please "keep this person in your thoughts."  It used to be said, "in your thoughts and prayers." With all due respect, what good is that? Is there any true power that comes from just thinking about someone? Yes, it does help for well-meaning folks to send cards or flowers, to pay a visit. We all thrive on the love of others! But just think of the difference prayer makes. When we lift up the ailing person before Jesus, we are approaching the throne of the One who created all of us.

     When Jesus walked this earth, he healed many people. A paralyzed man had four friends who desired his healing so they carried him onto the roof over Jesus' head when the house was too crowded to get near. They made an opening and lowered him down in front of the Great Healer. They went beyond just thinking about their friend; they had faith in Christ and brought him forth and he was healed.

     If you have a friend in need, after sending your get well card, approach the throne of grace with confidence. There you will find help in your time of need.

What Will Your Obituary Say?

"Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen. Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you."
Ephesians 4: 29, 31 & 32

     These verses are so important, especially for parents.

     I recently read about a very bald, startling obituary that was written by an abusive woman's children. They were celebrating her passing, hoping she receives everything done to her as she'd dished out to them. Had this woman been a child of God and used the above verses when raising her children, she would not have borne decades worth of bitterness, rage and malice.

     Although the obituary was painfully honest, I can only hope it makes others think before they speak and act. What we say and do has lasting impact. Are we building up or tearing down? What legacy are we leaving behind?

     I've heard it said the dash between the dates on one's tombstone represent alot! I wonder, if my family were to write a truthful obituary about me before I died, would I want to read it?

     I wonder.

The Real High Priest

"When Jesus said this, one of the officials nearby struck him in the face. 'Is this the way you answer the high priest?' he demanded."

     This official died one day and stood before his Maker. Imagine the shock at seeing Jesus, dressed in all his glory as The High Priest, standing before him in judgment. Caiaphas, the high priest of this story at the time of Jesus' crucifixtion, also died. What did God say to him at the pearly gates?

     It's dangerous to ever think more highly of yourself than you ought. Take on the role of a servant. Sit at the far end of the table; maybe you'll be moved to a higher position by your host. Think of others as better than yourself and always put God first. Satan was once an angel who thought he could outrank God and we all know what became of him!

     Jesus is Lord! Give him due praise and respect.

The Choice is Yours

"I have chosen the way of truth; I have my heart set on your laws."
Psalm 119:30

     Recently, I was appalled by a personal ad I saw in the paper. A man named Don was looking for a witch, someone who could cast spells and work divinations. I felt a prick of fear for this Don - he has no idea just how deep that evil darkness can be - and yet, he is choosing it! If he maintains that direction, he will be tossed about and eaten alive.

     Praise God, I can steadfastly set my heart on his foundation that will never be shaken. I never have to wonder what the truth is, as Pontius Pilate did, for I have looked into the eyes of Christ and found it! With the help of God, I will be found standing firmly at the end of this crazy life.

     My prayer is that you will find the way, the truth and the life when you turn your eyes upon Jesus. John 3:16 says, "For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believes on him shall not perish, but shall have eternal life." The choice is yours.

Don't Mess With It

"Do not add to what I command you and do not subtract from it, but keep the commands of the Lord your God that I give you."
Deuteronomy 4:2

     Don't mess around with the law of God which is the Ten Commandments. It's just perfect the way it is so, just keep it!

     Love your God and worship none other. Do not abuse his holy name. Remember the Sabbath day and honor your parents.  Do not commit murder or adultery. Do not steal, lie or covet.

     Deuteronomy 4:6 says: "Observe them carefully for this will show your wisdom and understanding to the nations."

     I used to think God's commands were given just to keep us from having fun and to let God be bossy (I was very young and rebellious when I thought that!).  Now, I am quite thankful that God loved us enough that he gave us this template to live by and aspire to. He wants us to rise above our baser natures, to live as civilized people, not lawless buffoons. These commandments encompass all a society needs to live upright, peaceful lives. They are a precious gift, complete and in no need of editing. In my heart, I have broken every one of the ten, but thanks be to Jesus, he has paid for my sins.

     Help me, O God, to strive to live a holy life.

A Parent's Prayer

     I'd like to speak to the parents today. Perhaps you have a child who really worries you. The child may be an adult or live in another state and you feel so helpless when they struggle. The evil one prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour, and you feel as though your precious child is his next meal. What can you do?

     You can daily pray Psalm 91, inserting your loved one's name within. I'll provide an excerpt using the name Mary:

"Mary will say of the Lord, 'He is my refuge and my fortress, my God in whom I trust.' Surely he will save Mary from the fowler's snare and from the deadly pestilence. He will cover her with his feathers and under his wings she will find refuge; his faithfulness will be her shield and rampart. Mary will not fear the terror of night, nor the arrow that flies by day, nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness, nor the plague that destroys at midday. A thousand may fall at her side, ten thousand at her right hand, but it will not come near her...For he will command his angels concerning her to guard her in all her ways; they will lift her up in their hands so that she will not strike her foot against a stone...I will be with her in trouble. I will deliver her and honor her."

     I have heard this is the perfect scripture to send along with a soldier as they leave for battle. Daily living is a battle! We can cover another in prayer, especially when they are unable to pray for themselves, for whatever reason. Fervently pray this prayer, envisioning your loved one surrounded by a hedge of holy protection. God really does care!

    

Great is Thy Faithfulness

"I remember my affliction and my wandering, the bitterness and the gall. I well remember them, and my soul is downcast within me. Yet this I call to mind and therefore I have hope: because of the Lord's great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning, great is your faithfulness."
Lamentations 3: 19-23

     Every morning, like the manna that fell from heaven to feed the Israelites, I receive a fresh serving of God's great love and compassion. A free refill! A whole serving, not yesterday's leftovers.
    
     In this broken world, there are fresh doses of bitterness and affliction, that is certain, but God has the perfect anecdote. As he watches me battle it out, he has compassion and looks down upon me with great love. Handing weapons down to me, I receive his Holy Spirit, the gift of prayer, the Scriptures and his promise to never leave me.

     What have I to fear?

     One of my favorite hymns is "Great is thy Faithfulness"

Great is thy faithfulness, O God my Father,
There is no shadow of turning with thee.
Thou changest not, thy compassions they fail not.
As thou hast been, thou forever wilt be.

Great is thy faithfulness!

Morning by morning, new mercies I see
All I have needed, thy hand hath provided,
Blessings all mine with ten thousand beside!

Jesus: Been There, Done That

     Have you ever been so tired you feel like dropping while still in the harness? Ever been betrayed by a friend? Has your own family not believed in you or supported you? Have you ever felt lonely and abandoned by both God and man? Homeless? Hungry? Thirsty? Mocked and reviled by your own kind?

     Perhaps you remember the commercial for Scrubbing Bubbles in which the cartoon bubble dude, before swirling down the bathtub drain, yells out, "We do all the work so you don't have tooooo....." This reminds me of all the work Christ did for us, so we don't have to.

     While tempted in the desert, Jesus was powerfully hungry, having fasted for 40 days and nights (Matthew 4:2). He had no place to lay his head (Matthew 8:20). His own brothers did not believe in him (John 7:5). In the Garden of Gethsemane, he was in such anguish that his sweat was like great drops of blood (Luke 22:44). After being betrayed by a close friend (Matthew 26: 14-16), he was arrested and his disciples left his side (Matthew 26:56). Mocked and reviled by his own kind, he was scourged and humiliated, too tired to carry his cross through the streets of Jerusalem (Luke 23:26).  Nailed on the cross as an innocent man, he was forsaken by God his Father (Matthew 27:46) before giving his all for sinners like us.

     He could have called ten thousand angels anytime along the way to provide anything he needed, but he soldiered through to bring us the victory. Now we can "approach the throne of grace with confidence". Lean on the everlasting arms of a Savior that has experience. He has done all the work, so you don't have to.

What Will be Written of You?

Romans chapter 16

     In this chapter of Paul's letter to the Romans, the names of thirty-three Christians are mentioned for the various ways they've worked for the Body of Christ. One was a "great help to many people." Two risked their lives for Paul. Epenetus is listed as the first convert to Christianity in Asia. Andronias and Junias were in prison for their faith. There's Mary who "worked very hard." Appeles was "tested and approved in Christ." Rufus' mother had been like a mother to Paul, too. Tertius wrote the words in the letter for Paul, as a secretary. Gaius was noted for his hospitality.

     My name is not written in the Bible, but it is engraved on God's palms! (see Isaiah 49:16) It is also written in the Book of Life:

     "He who overcomes will, like them, be dressed in white. I will never blot out his name from the book of life, but will acknowledge his name before my Father and his angels." Revelation 3:5

     As a Christian, what talents or abilities, what good works for Jesus, will be written next to my name? Will I be remembered for my hospitality or being like a mother to others? Would I risk my life or suffer imprisonment?

     What I do each day pens my life's story, one word at a time.

Like Going Back Home

"...you whom I have upheld since you were conceived, and have carried since your birth, even to your old age and gray hairs. I am he, I am he who will sustain you. I have made you and I will carry you; I will sustain you and I will rescue you."
Isaiah 46: 3 & 4

     After I became an adult and lived on my own, I missed mom's homecooked meals. If I became sick, I no longer had that compassionate attention I once did. Maybe that's why going home for Thanksgiving feels so special. It harkens back to those unique childhood feelings.

     We never have to move out of God's house. He sustains us and carries us from conception to old age and beyond, ever coming to our rescue! It's such a comfort to know the same One who made me, sustains me all along the way.

A Child Never Forgotten

"Can a mother forget the baby at her breast and have no compassion on the child she has borne? Though she may forget, I will not forget you! See, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands."
Isaiah 49: 15 & 16

     It was the most difficult book I ever read. A Child Called It was difficult because it's about a boy who was so unloved by his mother, so ghastly abused, neglected and mistreated, that she no longer called him by name. She called him It.

     Praise and thanks be to God that He is not like that. He loves us more fervently and tenderly than our mothers. He is slow to anger, rich in  mercy and abounding in love.

     Your name is tattooed on the palms of his pierced hands! Love him right back and you will never, ever be sorry. He will never forget you, even if your parents have.

Know Where You're Going

"Then Jesus told them, 'You are going to have the light just a little while longer. Walk while you have the light before darkness overtakes you. The man who walks in the dark does not know where he is going.'"
John 12:35

     I like to watch the ants, wondering about their hard-working lives, what their underground homes look like and what propels them. I saw one crawling alone across my vast patio; where was he going? How does he know the way? As far as I know, there are no ant cartographers around drawing maps, making signs.  Finally, I surmised that God gave him a built-in GPS. He tells the ant which way to go.

     How refreshingly wonderful it is each day for me to know where I'm headed. I don't mean this in a literal sense, because, to be honest, sometimes it's not so wonderful to be headed to work. As a Christian, I do not have to stumble in the darkness without plan or purpose. Each night, God tucks me in and watches over me during his sleepless night. By day, I walk in the footsteps of Christ, the Light of the world. The end of the journey is heaven, a glorious place where there is no need of sun or moon. The Lamb is its lamp. (Revelation 21:23)

     Isaiah 60:20 says: "Your sun will never set again, and your moon will wane no more; the Lord will be your everlasting light, and your days of sorrow will end."

The Proper Perspective

"On the appointed day Herod, wearing his royal robes, sat on his throne and delivered a public address to the people. They shouted, 'This is the voice of a god, not of a man.' Immediately, because Herod did not give praise to God, an angel of the Lord struck him down, and he was eaten my worms and died."
Acts 12: 21-23

     Keep the proper perspective. Don't let your ego get so big that it overshadows your Creator. God desires a humble heart.

     Satan once thought he'd like to be larger than God: he would like to be praised and worshipped. Because of that, he, who once was an angel, was cast out of heaven.

     Don't be swayed by the adulation of others. Even Herod's royal robes and throne were not enough to help him when God struck him down. He lost his perspective.

     Isaiah 14: 13-15 says:  "You said in your heart, 'I will ascend to heaven; I will raise my throne above the stars of God; I will sit enthroned on the mount of assembly, on the utmost heights of the sacred mountain. I will ascend above the tops of the clouds; I will make myself like the Most High.' But you are brought down to the grave, to the depths of the pit."

A Living Letter

"You show that you are a letter from Christ...writen not wiht ink but with the Spirit of the Living God, not on ablets of stone but on tablets of human hearts."
2 Corinthians 3:3

     Next to this passage, the sidebar of my Bible says, "Believers are living epistles." My Christian life is an open book that sells more copies than I realize because impressionable folks are reading what God is writing on me.

     What do I want others to see? My snarly side that rears up when selfishness reigns? How many pages would have me portrayed as being kind, loving, forgiving, courageous or compassionate?

     Jesus, I must close the book on my old self and allow your Spirit free license to author my biography. Amen.

How Shall I Dress?

"And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him."
Colossians 3: 17

     As a believer, how should I dress before leaving the house? Colossians chapter three lists a selection of garments: compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. (verse 12)  Wearing these helps me to bear with others in forgiveness, just as God forgave me. How did he forgive me? By chucking my iniquities into the deep, deep sea. Therefore, I have no right to hold a grudge against anyone. It'd be like accessorizing my outfit with a purse of dripping, stinking mud. My overcoat is to be love (verse 14) because it covers over a multitude of sins. If I truly love others, their faults I no longer see.

     Once dressed, I am to let the peace of Christ rule my heart, consume his Holy Word daily and raise my voice in songs of thankfulness. (verses 15 & 16)

     Doing this each day will enable me to do ALL in the name of Jesus. I will be a well dressed woman, with the help of God.

No End in Sight

"Of the increase of his government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David's throne and over his kingdom, establishing it and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever."
Isaiah 9:7

     What do we know of eternity? Sometimes it seems like a boring speech goes on for an eternity, or someone may claim they will love you forever. When my mother and I visited her former high school, we sang the school's song that spoke of "eternal loyalty". (I had to chuckle since my mom barely remembered anything about the place.)

     The definition of eternal is: without beginning or end, existing through all time, forever the same, always true. In light of this, the human idea of eternity seems ridiculous.

     Only God is truly eternal.

     How confused the followers of Jesus must've been when he was crucified. The prophecies these Jewish people knew like the back of their hand said their Messiah would reign on David's throne with eternal righteousness and justice. Where is this increase of his government? What happened to the endless peace?

     The first advent of Christ was to establish his kingdom of believers. He wants no one to perish, thus he departed with his Great Commission: "Go into all the world and preach the good news to all creation." (Mark 16:15)

     The second advent will put the Evil One in his place, all people will be judged and Jesus will reign with the saints. Then, the government will be upon his shoulders and he will verily be the Prince of Peace. Amen, Lord Jesus. Come quickly.

Give to Receive

"Honor the Lord with your wealth, with the first fruits of all your crops; then your barns will be filled to overflowing and your vats will brim over with new wine."
Proverbs 3: 9 & 10

     I don't grow crops but I can imagine all the work that goes into the process: soil preparation, planting, weeding, watering, insect control, harvesting. It would be tempting to feel rewarded by that first piece of fruit when all is said and done. After all, I did all the work, right?

     Could I have done any of it without sun, soil, rain or the initial seeds?

     I have been made by Christ and for Christ; all of my resources come from Him. The Bible teaches some things in a backward way than what society would have me do. If I want to have overflowing barns, why would I give any of it away? However, nothing really belongs to me, does it? The house I live in was once occupied by someone else who may even be deceased by now. The car I drive will be in the junk yard one day. The food I ate yesterday will run through tomorrow's sewers.

     Don't be tight-fisted. Give generously, first to God, then to others and you will be rewarded beyond measure.

A Valuable Heirloom

"But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of because you know those from whom you learned it, and how from infancy you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus."
2 Timothy 4: 14 & 15

     My mother would regularly quote scriptures that pertained to my circumstances in life. When I was mad at my sister, she'd listen to my grousing before gently reminding me: "Do not let the sun go down on your anger."  When I became restless and bored, she'd say, "Idle hands are the devil's workshop," as she handed me a list of chores. When, as an adult, the storms of life caused me to doubt, she'd mail a small card to me with these words: "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him and he will make your paths straight."

     Why did she coach me in this way? It's because she'd tested the faith for herself and knew the word of God to be an unfaltering foundation, not just for the time being, but for all eternity. The Scriptures were woven into the fabric of my days just as naturally as good recipes, happy memories and family traditions. This type of heirloom cannot be stolen, will not come apart and will always retain its value.

     I'll take it!

Have a Little Compassion

"A bruised reed he will not break, and a smouldering wick he will not snuff out."
Isaiah 42:3

     One of my neighbors is a smouldering wick. The evidence of her disadvantages or poor choices in this life are seen in her unkempt yard and noisy nights. While I feel sorry for her children, I find myself running out of patience with her. I wish she'd clean up her act.
 
     Am I being Christ-like? Would Jesus act that way toward her?

     Thank God, Jesus is not like me. I am ashamed of myself as I feel the loving, compassionate eyes of my Savior bearing down hard on me! I can envision Jesus patiently bending over a wick being drowned in wax, coaxing it along until the flame burned brightly once more. Tenderly, he'd keep fertilizing and pruning a struggling house plant that I would have set on the curb long ago.

     Christianity is a tougher road to walk when it goes right by the front of your house, isn't it? If I had the courage of Christ, I'd go talk to this neighbor and offer a hand. If I am to reflect the compassion of God in my life, I had better clean up MY act!

     Father, forgive me. Help me to remove the log in my own haughty eyes before I worry about the speck of sawdust in those of my neighbor. I thank you for not giving up on me when I smoulder in my sins.

God's Laundry Soap

"Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin." Psalm 51:2

"Cleanse me with hyssop and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow." Psalm 51:7

"'Come now, let us reason together,' says the Lord. 'Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are as red as crimson, they shall be like wool.'"  Isaiah 1:18

     When my husband worked for the water department, he'd often come home dressed in mud, head to toe. He even had mud in his ears! Now, I don't care what claims the leading brands make, all the soaking, scrubbing and spraying could not thoroughly clean those clothes. So, he wore stained stuff!

     Here is one of God's mysteries: How can blood cleanse? I thought it made unsightly stains, but there is power in the blood of Christ. Jesus, the Ultimate Stain Fighter, leaves no hints of former ground-in grime or grease to remind us of all the mud in our lives. Once we repent of our scarlet stains, he washes us whiter than snow so we don't have to go around in stained stuff. So, put on the righteous robes of the Savior and you will be the best dressed person around.

Jesus Meets You Where You Are

"Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with him and he with me."
Revelations 3:20

     Jesus meets me where I am. He comes to my house, knocking and calling my name, because he desires a true, daily relationship. A simple meal, a quiet conversation, wondering how I've been - I can have this closeness with my Savior if I but open the door.

     That's how Jesus is. He goes out looking for the lost sheep. He enters the home of sinners and notorious no-gooders, just as he did in Bible times.

     Zacchaeus was a despised tax collector. When Jesus came to his town, he wanted to see him but was too short to peer over the crowd. So, he climbed a sycamore tree that branched out over the road. When Jesus walked beneath, he stopped, looked up and called Zacchaeus by name. Jesus met him where he was, in the middle of the road, in a tree. "Zacchaeus, come down immediately. I must stay at your house today," Jesus said in Luke 19, verse five.

     Jesus is calling your name today. Don't tarry! Answer his call right away and you won't be sorry. I am living proof.

     "For the Son of Man came to seek and save what was lost." Luke 19:10

Hurling Baggage

"You will again have compassion on us; you will tread our sins underfoot and hurl our iniquities into the depths of the sea."
Micah 7:19

     Have you ever sorely regretted a sin you committed against someone? You apologized profusely, the wronged person assured your forgiveness, yet they kept bringing it up? Like a bandage that kept getting ripped off a wound, you could not heal.  Sometimes, I'm glad humans have great memories; other times, not.

     Close your eyes and imagine God grinding his heel into your sin, pulverizing all likes of it into the ground. Or he's standing on a high cliff over a raging sea holding all your regrets in a black bag. With all his might, he chucks it into the sea as far as he can!  Do you think he's interested in seeing if it floats to the surface so he can reopen it and rummage through all your stuff? No.

     God sent his beloved Son into the world to forgive sins, not to condemn us. He does not want anyone to perish. He is loving, patient and compassionate.

     If you have something you just cannot forgive yourself for, put it into the baggage, stand beside the God of the universe and chuck it as far as you can! Then the two of you can get on with life, reconciled, redeemed and renewed.

A Firm Foundation

"So, this is what the Sovereign Lord says, 'See, I lay a stone in Zion, a tested stone, a precious cornerstone for a sure foundation; the one who trusts will never be dismayed."
Isaiah 28: 16

      The old house in which I was raised is still there, silently standing on the shady street by the vacant elementary school. The kids are grown and gone, my father's in an assisted living facility; my mother remains there. It's a place dear to my heart with its spidery basement, creaky wood floors and screened back porch where we ate watermelon and squirted seeds at each other. Raised by Christian parents, this is where I felt safe and securely loved. Even after I moved out, I could always return for a warm reception, laughter and support. Like Scarlett O'Hara, I thought I drew my strength from the red earth of my Tara. As time changes things, I wonder how could I ever accept someone else living there someday?

     A black and white photograph I have shows me at age three standing by the foundation of that house, ready for Sunday School with my offering envelope in hand and a large Bible tucked under my arm. As I pondered that photo, I came to realize that my true strength comes from the tested Cornerstone, Jesus Christ. Everything that I see is temporary; what is unseen is eternal so I place my trust on that tested Stone. I will never be dismayed.

The Faithful Presence

"When I awake, I am still with you."
Psalm 139:18

     What if I woke up and God was missing? It would be like waking up to find my spouse has left me, or my child was not in her bed. Frantic panic and profound emptiness would quickly ensue as the realization dawned on me: "He's gone. I'm alone."  Have you ever known that level of lonliness?
   
     Here are the promises from our Divine Presence:

     "I am with you and will watch over you wherever you go."  Genesis 28:15

     "When you pass through the waters, I will be with you."  Isaiah 43:2

     "And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age."  Matthew 28:20

God is faithful. He never changes so you can trust in him. Relax in his presence.

Use Quality Materials

"For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Christ Jesus. If any man builds on this foundation using gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay or straw, his work will be shown for what it is, because The Day will bring it to light."

1 Corinthians 3: 11-13

     We all have been given the same foundation on which to build, that of the precious Lamb of God. What materials will you use? Gold or straw?

     In this world, only what is done for Christ will last. If I tithe ten percent of my time and money, if I devote daily time toward reading the Bible and prayer, if I confess my sins, share the gospel and act with hospitality, generosity and love - these are the golden materials.

     Why would I choose anything of lesser, flimsy quality?

Do the Right Thing

"Do not follow the crowd in doing wrong." Exodus 23:2

"Stop doing wrong, learn to do right." Isaiah 1:16

"Never tire of doing what is right."  2 Thessalonians 3:13

"The precepts of the Lord are right, giving joy to the heart." Psalm 19:8

     Doing the right thing is a conscious choice. It may not come naturally, and it may be a very difficult thing to do at times, especially if everyone else chooses a different path.

     Recently, I had a decision to make. In trying to receive benefits from a governmental office to help my parents, it was surreptitiously suggested by someone that I hide some of their assets. If I had sent the request through as is, I ran the risk of not receiving the benefits. After reading the above verses, the answer was very clear: send the application honestly and let God do as He sees fit. This brings joy to my heart!

     When constructing anything, right angles are necessary or the whole project will go awry!  Do the right thing and God will bless your efforts.

Why Search for Jesus?

"Once the crowd realized that neither Jesus nor his disciples were there, they got into the boats and went to Capernaum in search of Jesus."
John 6:24

     What motivates me to search for Jesus? Some of the people in the Gospel of John wanted Jesus to be their earthly king, to provide food, to demonstrate power and to bring Rome under their feet.

     Do I seek Jesus for these reasons, knowing He is the omnipotent King of all? While that is surely a benefit beyond all measure, I'd like to say I seek Jesus for completeness. Without Him, I've a void that aches and I have dark red sin stains which weigh me down. Jesus gives me peace that passes all understanding, joy that exceeds happiness and hope for a future that He mandates.

     "I am trusting thee, Lord Jesus, trusting only thee.
     Trusting thee for full salvation, rich and free."

Love One Another

"A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another."
John 13: 34 & 35

     "As I have loved you." There's the heart of it all! I am to love others in the same way that Jesus loves me - and just how is that? He washes my feet, he does not condemn me, he forgives me 70 times 7, he does not cast the first stone, he laid down his life for me. What a tall order! Yet it is a command. Why is it so important that Jesus insists upon it?
    
     As he explains in the next verse: "By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another." It is like a brand name on the back of my jeans, or like an accent or a distinguishing feature so that all the world may recognize me as a Christian. If I have a faith that can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. (see 1 Corinthians 13)

     I read an article in the paper the other day entitled "Deadly Start to Holy Month in Iraq." In the Muslim world, Ramadan is meant to be a month set aside for spiritual growth and generosity. According to the article, it is "shaping up to be the deadliest in Iraq."  Just seven days into Ramadan, one hundred sixty-nine Iraqis have been killed as suicide attacks and car bombings widely spread chaos and fear. Folks have been killed while playing a game, swimming with friends, shopping for festive dinners or coming home from prayers.

     As a Christian, may I remember the words of Jesus and strive to be a part of the solution to the problems in this world. The best place to start is to love one another. After all, I see what happens in a religion that has not love.

Welcome to the Family

"When she heard about Jesus, she came up behind him in the crowd and touched his cloak because she thought, 'If I just touch his clothes, I will be healed.'...
     At once, Jesus realized that power had gone out of him. He turned around in the crowd and asked, 'Who touched my clothes?'"
Mark 5: 27-34

     He knows it and she knows it. Both Jesus and the woman know he has healed her chronic suffering, yet he wants to speak to her. It's not that he wants to chastise her but he wants to personally assure her that her faith has made her whole. He desires eye contact, conversation, a personal touch. By addressing her as "daughter", he accepts her into his family.
     How beautiful is that?

Grow Up

"So neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but only God who makes things grow."
1 Corinthians 3:7

     Growth is so important. If I were the same size I was in 1961, I'd not have been able to experience things like marriage and motherhood. Intellectual growth is just as important, but, unlike my physique, should never cease.  As my dad used to say, until I've read all the books down at Morley Library, I don't know it all. Spiritual growth, of the three components, is most crucial. After all, if I'm going to spend eternity with my Savior, I want to know all I can about him. I love him; he loves me so I want to explore his background, his roots, his future, his family, his likes and dislikes.

     Faith begins like a small seed. Once planted, the sunshine of Scripture and the rain of prayers cultivate my heart as the Spirit continues to pull weeds. It's a lifelong process that is necessary for eternal happiness.

     "But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ." 2 Peter 3:18

Are You Thirsty?

"Jesus answered, 'Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.'"
John 4: 13 & 14

"'Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him.' By this he (Jesus) meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to recieve."
John 7: 38 & 39

     When I awoke today, feeling thirsty, I drank some water before my feet even hit the floor.  Padding into the bathroom, I used water there for all my daily needs. In fact, that's a room that would be utterly useless without water. Coming downstairs, I gave fresh water to the pets, then filled the coffee pot also. Looking outside, I see how the thunderstorm during the night has nourished the foliage and created baths for the birds.
     Where would any of us be without water? Not too many days would pass before I'd be dirty, disheveled and dehydrated. My organs would dry up, my brain would disconnect, I'd be dead.
     With the Spirit of God dwelling within me, I have a wellspring of life flowing from my soul! Saying my prayers and reading my Bible refresh me like a cold drink on a hot day. When I walk through the deserts of discouragement, depression or disease, I have all I need for the journey. "His grace is sufficient for all my needs."
     Some folks do not even realize how thirsty they are. Jesus is wanting a personal, vibrant, abundant relationship with YOU. Ask him into your heart today and you will never be thirsty again.

This is My Country

"All these people were still living by faith when they died. They did not receive the things promised; they only saw them and welcomed them from a distance. And they admitted that they were aliens and strangers on earth. People who say such things show that they are looking for a country of their own. If they had been thinking of the country they had left, they would have had opportunity to return. Instead, they were longing for a better country - a heavenly one. Therefore, God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared a city for them."
Hebrews 11: 13-16

     In the grand scheme of things, I am one of the luckiest, richest women on earth, not because I own five hundred pairs of shoes or use cashmere burp cloths, but because I am an American, living in a beautiful home that is paid in full. I have a husband who adores me, two lovely daughters, my parents and siblings live nearby. I have a car, a job, excellent health and three pets. I have never been hungry a day in my 51 years. I have never been sued, raped or abused. A bevy of caring friends and neighbors surround me and I know Jesus as my best friend.
     With all of this, there are still times of depression or discouragement. I live behind locked doors, just in case. Sin still permeates this broken world.
     As the old hymn goes: "I am but a stranger here; Heaven is my home." Within the New Jerusalem, nothing evil shall ever enter! There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain. God shall wipe away all tears from my eyes. He, himself, will be with me.
    Only then shall I truly proclaim: "This is my country, land that I love."

Just Do It

"Now when Daniel learned that the decree had been published, he went home to his upstairs room where the windows opened to Jerusalem. Three times a day, he got down on his knees and prayed, giving thanks to his God, just has he had done before."
Daniel 6:10

     This decree said "anyone who prays to any god or man during the next thirty days except to you, O King (Darius), shall be thrown into the lion's den." (6:7) Now, the concept of being thrown into a den of hungry, prowling lions would be scary to most. Perhaps Daniel, fearing for his life, could have reasoned, "It's only for 30 days. Maybe I should just cease my daily way of praying to save my skin." However, Daniel wisely relied on the salvation of God, not on himself, and he went home and did things just as he did before.
     Being an American, I enjoy freedom of religion, but I may not always have that. Things have a way of changing. However, no decree from any government is going to alter my faith. My help comes from the name of the Lord.

Get the Seeds Out of the Shed

     In the Parable of the Sower, found in Luke 8: 4-15, it is the same man who is scattering the same seed, yet not all seeds grow. Why? It depends on where it lands.

     When telling the gospel story, one never knows how it'll be received. Will the hearer have a hard heart? Will they accept Christ, believe in him and persevere? Or will the worries of life choke their faith?

     It's more important to scatter that seed, not worrying about the outcome. What good does it do to keep the seed bag sealed, sitting in the shed? But if we open our hearts and mouths to those who may not know about the gospel, we may just sow on "good soil." Those who have a noble and good heart who hear the word, retain it and, by persevering, produce a crop.

The Broken Chains of Bondage

"The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners."
Isaiah 61:1

Let Freedom Ring! Sound the Liberty Bell! God has sent Jesus to release us from the slavery and imprisonment of Satan.

     My favorite, most treasured symbol of America is the Statue of Liberty. She holds a torch to light the way while the broken chains of tyranny pool around her feet. These words of Emma Lazarus, engraved on her pedestal, could have been taken from scripture:

"Give me your tired, your poor,
your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

     Only Jesus provides true liberty from the imprisonment of darkness, from the tyranny of evil. He has set the captive free and broken the chains of slavery. Believe upon his name and this truth shall set you free.

Jesus, The Patriot

"You, my brothers, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the sinful nature, rather, serve one another in love."
Galatians 5:13

     I've heard it said that "freedom is not free." On Independence Day, I reflect on my patriot forefathers who gave of life and limb for my liberty.
     Romans 8, verses one and two, tells me of my spiritual Patriot who died for my liberty:

"Therefore, there in now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the spirit of life sets me free from the law of sin and death."

     This freedom far outweighs freedom of speech and religion. With this brand of liberty, I am free from sin and death! I do not have the freedom to do whatever I please, but to imitate Christ by serving others in love.

God Bless America

"It was not by their sword that they won the land, nor did their arm bring them victory; it was your right hand, your arm, and the light of your face, for you loved them."
Psalm 44:3

God loves America. He has blessed her with liberty and prosperity. In turn, we have said, "In God We Trust." Our stores used to remain closed on Sundays; folks went to church. Kids prayed in school and we were "one nation, under God, with liberty and justice for all." Have we lost sight of our origins?
God lifted his countenance upon our great nation because he wanted us to be a safe haven for worshippers.The government must stay out of religion so believers are free to worship as they choose.
This Independence Day, I pray that we remember to remain dependent on God. Only by his right hand are we victorious.

God, the Problem Solver

"Moses was troubled. He asked the Lord, 'Why have your brought this trouble on your servant? What have I done to displease you that you put the burden of all these people on me? Did I conceive these people? Did I give them birth? ... I cannot carry all these people by myself...If this is how you're going to treat me, put me to death right now.'"
Numbers 11:11-15

     It's interesting that this sort of bald grumbling by Moses does not anger God, rather the Lord saw the depressed state of Moses and he listened to him. Then, God came up with a solution. He spread the burden among seventy elders, bringing relief to poor Moses.
     Sometimes, we all feel burdened by other people or our circumstances. Maybe a mother of young children or a person who works in a busy office feels the pressure of caring for others. Even pastors need a break now and then. God understands this. If we, in all honesty, cry out for some help, God will never let us down. He will come up with a solution!

How to Sleep Like a Baby

"My son, preserve sound judgment and discernment, do not let them out of your sight; they will be life for you...When you lie down, you will not be afraid, your sleep will be sweet."
Proverbs 3: 21, 24

     When a furious squall arose on the lake and swamped the disciples' boat, "Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion." (Mark 4:38) They shook him awake saying, "Teacher, don't you care if we drown?" They may have been wondering how anyone could sleep through such a bad storm.
     When my youngest daughter was almost a year old, we took her to her first fireworks on the Fourth of July. She slept through the whole thing! Amazed, I wondered why she could not hear the noise but slumbered sweetly, unconcerned.
     What is the key to getting a good night's rest?
     After Jesus stilled the storm, he said, "Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?" (Mark 4:40)  Jesus says we have the same faith and peace available to us that he has. When storms of life prevail, I can be asleep in the stern on a cushion if only I have faith.
     "Faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see." (Hebrews 11:1) Just like the baby at the fireworks, I can be sure that my Heavenly Father cradles me in his arms, stroking my hair and whispering, "Fear not. You are worth more than many sparrows."
     Sleep sweetly, precious child of God.

My Sanctuary

"For we are the temple of the living God. As God has said, 'I will live with them and walk among them, and I will be their God, and they will be my people'"
2 Corinthians 6:16

     I am a temple, a holy dwelling place for The God. Everytime I walk among the people, God goes with me. When I go to lunch with a friend, watch a movie or go to work, He goes too. He's a silent listener to every conversation, a constant Presence as close as my own breath. When I pass another Christian, there goes God!
     Why do people want to have God living in them? What is it about Him that we never want to turn away?  
     It all points to the love Christ poured out for us on the cross. By becoming sin for me, by loving me and dying for me while I was still a sinner, by His stripes healing me ... this is my foundation of love for God. Once I said I believe in Jesus, his Spirit took up residence within me, creating a sanctuary from the evils of this world, freeing me from the power of the devil.
     Below is a poem written by my grandmother, Harmony Schupp, that is one of my favorites:


Sanctuary
 
I have a sanctuary small,
You have one too no doubt,
Where I can be serene and still
While storms may howl without.
 
For no one here disturbs my dreams

You Are Worth More

"Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both body and soul in hell. Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from the will of your Father. And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. So, don't be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows."
Matthew 10: 28-31

     Horror movies play on a person's fear of dying. Seems like that's the worst thing that can happen to a person, yet Jesus says this is not a reason to fear!
     I love to watch birds and the sparrows seem to be the most prolific, yet I love them the most because of this Bible verse. Sure, they are plentiful; what would it matter if one died? Also, it's said a person can lose one hundred hairs per day in their daily grooming. Who keeps track of such minutiae? God does! If these seemingly unimportant details are God's business, how much more are our souls?
     The only thing we have to fear is God, not fear itself. As a Christian, even if I die, my soul goes on to live in a mansion that has been prepared for me.
     So, don't be afraid. "You are worth more than many sparrows!"

Father's Day

"Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord."
Ephesians 6:4

     God is our Father, the Head of the House. If an earthly father needs some advice on how to raise his children, all he has to do is open his Bible, prayerfully considering what his Father has to say. God does not pick, pick, pick at us until we feel unworthy. He does not yell at or belittle his children. Rather, he says we can do all things through Christ who strengthens us. God is slow to anger, abounding in love and his mercies are fresh every morning.
     What an excellent role model!

Abide With Me

"Anyone who runs ahead and does not continue in the teaching of Christ does not have God; whoever continues in the teaching has both the Father and the Son."
2 John 9

     When I was in the third grade, our family went on a vacation out west. We were hiking in the mountains around Jenny Lake when the family paused on the trail. Confident that I knew the way, I ran ahead and became horribly lost. For hours, I wandered alone, fearful of the lions, tigers and bears I knew were lurking in the dark woods. The sweet reunion with my parents remains fresh on my mind. 
     In my Christian walk, I must keep pace with my Savior, abiding with him. I should not go off to the left or right, nor lag behind, but I should also be wary of becoming a know-it-all, thinking I know the way. If I take my focus off Him, that's when I become horribly lost.

I recall the words of this hymn, one of my favorites:

"Abide with me, fast falls the eventide;
The darkness deepens, Lord, with me abide.
When other helpers fail and comforts flee,
Help of the helpless, oh, abide with me!"
