No End in Sight

"Of the increase of his government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David's throne and over his kingdom, establishing it and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever."
Isaiah 9:7

What do we know of eternity? Sometimes it seems like a boring speech goes on for an eternity, or someone may claim they will love you forever. When my mother and I visited her former high school, we sang the school's song that spoke of "eternal loyalty". (I had to chuckle since my mom barely remembered anything about the place.)

The definition of eternal is: without beginning or end, existing through all time, forever the same, always true. In light of this, the human idea of eternity seems ridiculous.

     Only God is truly eternal.

How confused the followers of Jesus must've been when he was crucified. The prophecies these Jewish people knew like the back of their hand said their Messiah would reign on David's throne with eternal righteousness and justice. Where is this increase of his government? What happened to the endless peace?

The first advent of Christ was to establish his kingdom of believers. He wants no one to perish, thus he departed with his Great Commission: "Go into all the world and preach the good news to all creation." (Mark 16:15)

The second advent will put the Evil One in his place, all people will be judged and Jesus will reign with the saints. Then, the government will be upon his shoulders and he will verily be the Prince of Peace. Amen, Lord Jesus. Come quickly.
