Running the Race

"Let your eyes look straight ahead, fix your gaze directly before you. Make level paths for your feet and take only ways that are firm. Do not swerve to the right or to the left; keep your foot from evil."
Proverbs 4: 25-27

"Let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith."
Hebrews 12: 1 & 2

Anyone who has seen an Olympic track knows the pavement is smooth and level. It does not have unexpected curves, pits of mud or a smattering of gravel. The runners keep a sharp focus on what lay ahead. If they worried about the guy behind them or turned to wave at their mothers on the sidelines, do you think they would win?

It is that same intense drive that we should have as Christians. Lord knows there are plenty of distractions in the race, but we need to keep our eyes on Jesus to finish well. He is the "author and perfecter of our faith". To me, this means he wrote my life story, he knows how and when it's going to end and he knows if I will wipe out, twist my ankle or feel like quitting. He's my Coach!

"Turn your eyes upon Jesus,
Look full in His wonderful face,
And the things of earth will grow strangely dim,
In the light of his glory and grace."
