Superhero!

"If anyone hears my words but does not keep them, I do not judge that person. For I did not come to judge the world, but to save the world." - Jesus, as recorded in John 12:47

Who can save the world? This Herculean task would have to be assigned to a superhero because such a figure must possess abilities beyond those of ordinary people. He'd have to be endowed with super natural powers, have authority over evil and be committed to combatting threats against humanity. Who could possibly wear the cape?

My Superhero didn't wear a cape; He wore a crown of thorns. Coming from heaven, He, as the Son of God, had all authority of heaven and earth given to Him (Matthew 28:18). Even the demons believed in Him - and shuddered! He possessed the super natural powers necessary, as evidenced when He calmed a raging sea, gave sight to the blind and called a dead man to come forth from the tomb. He had the power to lay down His own life and the power to take it back up again. No one took His life from Him; He gave it willingly. Satan thought he had won the victory when Christ was crucified, but "having disarmed the powers and authorities, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross" (Colossians 2:15).

Why does our world need saving? The condition of our world is a broken one which stems from the human heart. I'm going to use a very unpopular word to identify our problem: Sin. The evil which permeates our world cannot be fixed by governmental programs, grants or newly elected officials brimming with promises. Nor will Spiderman come whipping in on a web to rescue us from the villains amid a chorus of praise from a grateful populace. "All have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God," according to Romans 3:23. No one is good. There's a war waging in each breast, like a white dog and black dog vying for control of the owner. We might desire to do the right thing, but we are unable to do so on our own. "What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body that is subject to death?" (Romans 7:24)

Our Superhero, who suffered a horrific death by crucifixion, broke the binds of Satan, freed us from our slavery to sin and rescued us from hell when "up from the grave He arose, with a mighty triumph o'er His foes! He arose a Victor from the dark domain and He lives forever with His saints to reign." He will be coming again on the clouds of heaven with all the saints and angels to take His believers home with Him, because He wants us to be with Him where He is. That's how committed this Superhero is to His mission to save humanity. Thanks be to God!

"I saw heaven standing open and there before me was a white horse, whose rider is called Faithful and True. With justice he judges and wages war. His eyes are like blazing fire, and on his head are many crowns." Revelation 19: 11, 12
